Mechanic wanted please for info.
May 13th, 2010, 8:27pm

Hiya all.

I asked at a garage today how much it would cost to have a timing belt replaced and was given a price.

Anyways my question to anyone out there who may know is: whoever they phoned up they gave my registration and up popped the part they needed, now is this info only available to garages or can anyone (myself) access this information. I would imagine this system is used for all parts of a car needed to be replaced.

Thank you all for any help you could give me.

Regards Rob.

hi rob

all cars are on a database they just punch in your reg and it will tell them what model and year so they can get the right parts for your model. i have one for ford and it tells me any recalls or what the garage has done at the services to what ford puts on the database. try google your make and serviceing. i only get part free as a full system is only to some garages as i think they have to pay a fee hope this helps pip.

Pips right, there is a free version doing the rounds for some small car part dealers, the paid version which most large chains and garages use tell them everything they need to know about your car, ie chassis number, engine number etc, that way they ensure the right parts are in stock and they can carry out the repair/service,

Doubt you'll find one to buy, but if you look hard enough you'll find them on the net with a patch to run them

I can only add that if you've got a real car (BMW) you can have a look here to find all your parts incl. price.  Wink
