Car tyre information please?
Nov 3rd, 2007, 5:04pm

Hi all,

Could someone please educate me please.

If a tyre says on the tyres wall R60 could I put a tyre on that says R65?

Everything is exactly the same on both tyres barring the above difference.

Thanks all for any help you could give me.

All the best.

Rob.

Isnt it something to do with the height/width of the tyre? My guess is that one is a lower profile to the other

hi m8,do you mean for example,  165x65r13,  165x60r13 ?
if this is the case, the 60,65 means the height or the profile of the tyre.you cant mix this profile on the same axle.its an mot failure for sure also.  cheers

Think they are all correct as its the profile series and the R stands for Radial construction.
Some bikes have cross ply and bias belted tyres.(Not relevant but may need to know in the future)

Thanks for all your input.

I have brought a tyre which I felt was cheap and I know now that because of the difference it wouldn't be acceptable unless I find another of same values.

I have looked on the Kwik Fit site and these are selling for £121.00.

If anyone else is remotely bothered about what the writing on the side of tyres mean, heres a link.

Once again, thank you very much everyone for your help.

All the best.

Hi m8,

As stated above, you can't mix tyres with different measures on the same axles. However you can mix dimensions between frant and rear axle. BMW owners (sporty models), for instant often have more width on the tyres on the rear axle than on the front one. But the length round the tyre must be the same. So if the width is bigger the height of the sidewall must be smaller.

You can always get help from the dealer.

I'm searching for the correct word m8. I think it's circumference? undecided You can calculate it by multiplying the (radius of the rim + (aspect ratio of tyre*widt)) *2*3.14 (Pi). I.e. If rim = 14", aspect ratio = 65, width = 165cm you calculate: 7"= 35.56cm+(65% of 165cm = )107.25=142.81*2*3.14=896.85cm

If you have tyres with more width, the aspect ratio must be smaller to get the same result.

The product shouldn't differ much between front and rear axle tyres. The more advanced car you've got (automatic gearbox, 4wheel drive) the less difference. Again: ask your dealer.

Hope this helps.

One qwick note, phone around before you go to Kwik Fit, I asked qwik fit and they quoted me £140 a tyre. I then said that I had been quoted £83.50 for the same make of tyre and with in 10 seconds they said we can do it for £80 all in!!

£140 to £80 in 10 seconds don't make sense, just goes to show you how much these places are charging there customers.

 Cool

Hi m8,
Dont go to kwik fit, they are one of the dearest around. I have m8's in the trade that are half the price.
If you want me to get you a price just reply with the exact tyre size you need, and it will be done.
I'm in Bradford, west Yorkshire, so if you are at the other end of the country, it might be a problem to get them to you though undecided

cheers

Hi Rob,

Right see if I can remember all this now Tongue

The Michilin 215 60 R16 = £93.00 + vat

Apparently Michilin dont do the 215 60 R16

Goodyear 215 65 HR 16 = £63.00+ vat

The HR applies to the speed rating apparently, and my m8 says that if you look on your tyre, there should be some letters/numbers after the R16 bit........such as 98W or similar.

He said if you get back with that rating, he will see exactly what else he can do.

Hope this helps Rob.

I always get my tyres from here, very quick delivery and then get kwik fit to fit and balance them.
