XP Firewall?
Sep 16th, 2004, 12:01am

Hi m8's,

I wonder about the inbuilt firewall in XP SP2. Is it any good? I know it stops a whole lot of sw to run properly, but does it do it's job otherwise?

Most of you know I'm a Norton man, so Panda is not an option (crashes my comps), Macafee doesn't seem intelligent enough and doesn't work properly with automatic updates , so is XP an alternative option?

with the amount of security alerts we get for all the other MS software it's asking a lot to believe this is any different

i wouldn't touch it with a parge pole

i'm a Norton fan too, i've been in some pretty nasty places on the web and Norton has always been up to the job (touch wood  Grin)

Hi m8's,

Thanx John. Just what I thought. Also been on nasty places and Norton has protected me better than rubber on a stick. Grin

Hi guys, I went over to McAfee from Norton after norton started playing up, it also missed a few threats that McAfee found, I've never had any problems with up-dates for McAfee, running there firewall as well, good bit of kit.

I Think I have tried all mentioned in the above posts and in the end I return to Norton, What you have to remember with Norton is throughout the year it gets better with all the fixes and updates and upgrades. They Bring out there software early and build it up to full strenth so at this time 2004 software is the best out their, tried Bitdefender seemed OK a first it was different. until you get a worm or virus, Worst software on the planet. But that is my opinion.

@ Haga I would change a.s.a.p I was infected with 2 worms at the same time forced me into a Format. Bitdefender, did not see them and no warning at all.

hi

i understand the inbuilt firewall in sp2 is still only inbound attacks and the default is now set to on.

i think the sp2 disc is asking for trouble if previous patches are anything to go by.

i manage perfectly well with zone alarm free version and so far its been a good performer.

regards

I also find Zone Alarm to be perfectly good, and also use the free AVG as my anti Virus, both of which seem to have regular updates. The fact that they are free is a major bonus.

lips sealedI said before it, I wouldn't touch it....but I put on SP2 and it cleaned my pirate stuff better than a reformat......I think I hate XP more than ever if that's possible.
ALL my soft for our hobby got murdered, including soft which it shouldn't have touched such as Multiprog soft.
Serious consideration is now going into going back to win 98se.......which runs well with all our hobby stuff.
Bludy XP.... lips sealed undecided Roll Eyes

Hi m8's,

Day before yesterday I received my complementary copy of SP" from MS, but before I installed it, I got it on automatic update and installed it from there. Doesn't seem to have done any harm to my sw. blue, how do you do it. ???

AdAware is an excellent sw, but it's not a firewall. And as fatbloke said: Isn't all sw free? Grin

Sp2 killed my DVB card software.Prog worked on
everything other than ppv on Thor. Now it only works
on the odd channel before it freezes.Still prefer it
though as with the other progs on I seem to be
attacked far less.No DSO exploit etc since touch wood.
