Title: New Forum section Request (Sly is at it AGAIN!)
Post by davidp on Apr 2nd, 2017, 1:22pm

Hey Steve et al

We have another project for you and it is likely to be big so I think a new section may be required.

I do not know if you have heard, but those sneaky guys at Sly have done it AGAIN.

This time it is on the NowTV box, a £5 (white) to £15 (black) product based on the Roku LT.  It is a beermat sized puck device.

It has always supported the Developer mode of Roku and this was how many 3rd party apps got loaded.

Sly sneaked out a firmware update that blocked this, they have also blocked all discussion on this, any discussion is moved and put to elevated security required.

What we need are some bright minds to pick up an old NowTV box, rip out the old firmware and develop a means to roll it back while blocking new firmware updates.

This update was done to block apps like Kodi but it also blocks a plethora of other Apps like Plex.

Sly own a share of Roku so they have forced this through.

I hope that this community of bright minds will get involved and get some use of these now "bricked" devices.

eBay would be a good source or anyone with old NowTV stock that has not been updated.

Thanks in advance!

Get a Roku m8, 2 or 3, I have a 3 and roku stick, works better.

I could do that but as Sky owns a percentage of Roku I would get an Amazon Firestick.

I just hate that thousands of people have been left in the lurch by this.

Would it just be a case of flashing an old firmware into it or is there more to it?

I don't have a now TV box so don't really know that much about them

Happy to facilitate via here if there is interest

So thinking about this, the box must check for firmware updates

It could be possible to redirect that request to a server under our control and get it to download a previous firmware or modified one, or am I covering things that have already been tried?
