Title: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by Steve on Jun 9th, 2003, 1:32pm In the UK it looks like we are going to have the euro sooner or later weather we like it or not. Most people in the UK are against the Euro and would rather keep the Pound £££. If you could choose would you have the euro or keep what you already have? Or would you get rid of the euro and go back to using DM/Francs/Guilders/Lire/Schillings/Kroner/Pasetas? |

Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by bob54 on Jun 10th, 2003, 6:52pm Now lets be really controversial. All us oldies are yearning to get back our old LSD in more ways than one. On the same kind of soap box when are we going to ditch this metric rubbish. Thank god I work for a firm that deals mainly with the States. All our Engineering drawings are Imperial. God save the Queen Bob54 |

Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by clivew on Jun 10th, 2003, 10:29pm I take pity on you there are 5280 survey feet in an american mile!! Clivew |
Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by bob54 on Jun 10th, 2003, 11:29pm FAO clivew Now we are really off topic, but, if there are 3 feet to a yard and 5.5 yards to a pole how many furlongs are there to a mile? End !! Bob54 |
Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by locktightT on Jun 11th, 2003, 4:54am You have to hand it to the Americans, who is going to make them sell food in grammes or kilo's, sell milk or beer in litres, petrol in litres.... IMHO I would prefer to be an American state than part of Europe, we have much more in common with the US than we will ever have with "Europe" T |
Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by clivew on Jun 11th, 2003, 11:53am Just for the record. The land of the free went metric in 1985 by act of congress. The US of A was one of the first countries outside the cradle of european civilisation and Napolian to adopt metric standards for thier measurements in 1860. The survey foot is 0.02 millimeters longer than the imperial foot and thus I guess an american mile is a touch longer than a UK mile.Imperial measurement was given ten years to be phased out.Kilometers havent been introduced yet and you can still legally use imperial measurement definitions because its tied to metric under the 1860 agreement. Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by Tucker on Jun 11th, 2003, 10:46pm Keep the pounds and pence !! Enough with the blo*dy Trading Standards and weights and measure people telling me I've got to display Grammes not ounces --- Kilo's not Pounds... Cheers Trev. |
Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by haga on Jun 12th, 2003, 1:53pm I went to the butchers the other day and asked for a pound of sausages, he said they are kilos now, so I said I'll have a pound of kilo's then! I'm with Tucker (nice to see your still about mate) on this, keep the £, dont want the euro. I see the poll has the "I want the Euro" catching up the those that dont, as a point of interest, a lot of the members on our site are from other countries (no bunter, not Scotland) I mean abroad, I wonder how many of those that want the euro are actually from the UK and how many abroad. haga |

Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by prezo on Jun 12th, 2003, 5:06pm I wonder if we do go Euro, will we get the same benefits, better workers rights, better pensions, better health service, to bring us up to the same standards as Germany,France, etc. I bloody doubt it, the bastards will opt out af that part, and it will not apply to us, and that`s a fact. cheers |
Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by salvt2000 on Jun 12th, 2003, 9:18pm hi bob54 1 furlong is 220 yard. 1/8 of miles. is 1 furlong. 201.168 of miter is 1 furlong ok ;D ;) |
Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by bob54 on Jun 12th, 2003, 11:22pm Hi salvt2000, We must be really sad but here goes 80 chains to a mile 10 chains to a furlong therefore there are 8 furlongs to a mile We agree there are 220yards in a furlong 8 furlongs therefore equals 1760 yards. I suppose the real question is --- What is a euro worth in Sterling?? Do we really care. I am sure Gordon will lie to us Bye |
Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by clivew on Jun 13th, 2003, 12:52pm According to Gordon Brown in his recent statement the pound is worth 1.37 euro.He didnt actually say that of course. This figure was used for all the calculations he made to access convergence. It is an unspoken admission that the pound is over valued and currently sustained by higher interest rates than worlwide.USAEurope,Japan,Switzerland all have interest rates in the 1-2% range. If you buy into the unique housing loan market in the UK I am certain you also believe in fairies. When mortgage rates are fixed for 25 years and the rate goes down you get another mortgage!! You dont just sit there paying ten percent when you can get a new one at 4% You remortgage!! I,m afraid the solution lies somewhere in higher taxes on rental property income, higher rates on rentalincome and a capital gains tax on all properies.Very unpopular!! Clivew |

Title: Re: Euro vs Pound/Franc/DM/Guilder/Kroner Post by drum on Jun 22nd, 2003, 10:25am Hi M8s..I agreee with most of the comments made so far about the euro. The good point about it is if you are travelling to another country[except U.K.] there's no messing around with currencies, some which looked liked monopoly money! Living in Ireland hereI,ve seen the changes here.Being an 'oldie'I remember the old l.s.d and we had the same rate as the U.K.pound,[great value wise] then we broke away and had the'punt'[not so great ] now we have the euro [worse, value wise,as every seemed to shoot up in price since we joined] which I voted for.I thought there would have been a standardisation of prices, taxes etc. cancel that out,so if you go to spain for example you still find things much cheaper than here.Overall, the euro is the the future, well the idea is good one europe one currency. But I hate the metric...I still measure in feet&inches and still think in miles, but when the e.e.c deciced that we shouldn't be drinking pints of guinness all hell broke loose!!!After some head-scratching we now have our pint marked on the metric glasses!!!! cheers all..drum :D |
